HAWAII / WAIKIKI BEACH
Waikiki is a gorgeous beach and even tho it is not the most beautiful beach in Hawaii, it is an iconic name just like, Ipanema or Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro.
A few small hotels opened in the 1880. Today 5 star resorts and high rises are part of the famous Waikiki skyline.
Due to the erosion, Hawaii started to import sand from Manhattan Beach, California in the 20s. The importing of sand is said to have stopped in the 1970s and officials are looking for ways to sustain the existing sand by eliminating loss due to tide flow.
Waikiki is known for its surfing spot, long boarding and tandem surfing, mostly for tourists.
Thanx to Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku aka Duke who is regarded as the person who popularized the modern sport of surfing.
And if you do not feel comfident enough for a board, then you'll find all sorts of fun floating devices all along the beach.
And then again if you do not feel confident enough to paddle on your own (we saw many tourists trapped off shore because of the strong currents) then you can jump on a boat to cruise the island along with a sexy skipper who will offer you a Mai Tai at sunset time ;-)
